Upcoming Events
Harbor Ave. / Alki Trail
We'll drop back in along the Alki Trail and continue south where we’ve been opening up the fence line since last year—creating a brighter, safer and more welcoming expanse along the bike path. There will be trash collection and Sprucing opportunities as we continue to address blackberry, ivy and weed overgrowth.
East Marginal Cleanup
The past two weeks we’ve removed butterfly bush along East Marginal as it creates line-of-sight issues for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, and has trapped a ton of garbage form years of neglect. This stretch is in the industrial area directly under elevated Highway 99 and is a trash-rich environment.
Hamilton Viewpoint
We’ll head to Hamilton Viewpoint this week for our first visit of the year heading into Spring. I swung by recently and couldn’t believe how nice the central planting beds still looked from last year’s heavy clean ups—but there’s always more to do.
Schmitz Park
We’ll meet forest steward Heather Scott at her entrance into Schmitz Park off Spokane St., and continue removing English ivy in her parcel which is quickly returning to a native state.
Harbor Ave. / Alki Trail

There will be trash collection and Sprucing opportunities as we continue to address blackberry, ivy and weed overgrowth.
Lincoln Park / Picnic Area 2
Last week we started Sprucing up the overgrown picnic area down behind the kid’s toys in the south end of the park by Shelter #2. We’ll continue with that work—cleaning the overgrown planting areas and uncovering native plants. There is plenty to work on here and will likely take several visits to get it in a good spot heading into Spring.
East Marginal Cleanup
Last week we started removing the overgrowth of butterfly bush on the south side of the West Seattle Bridge along the railroad tracks along East Marginal that are trash magnets and create line of sight issues. The area is directly under elevated Highway 99. This is also a trash-rich environment.
Native Family Learning Lodge Cleanup, Day 3
Group friend Lee, who runs the Heron's Nest and R.A.P.P. (River Access Paddle Program), has a new project down in Renton. The property will be turned into a child-centered, Indigenous/BIPOC-led, land-based education and cultural center. Prior to taking ownership, the land was a frequent hotspot for camps, so there is quite a bit of material to gather around the perimeter.
Harbor Ave. / Alki Trail
We'll drop back in along the Alki Trail and continue south down the fence line where we’ve been opening up the foliage since last year—creating a brighter, safer and more welcoming expanse along the bike path. There will be trash collection and Sprucing opportunities as we continue to address blackberry, ivy and weed overgrowth, removing deadwood—and raising the under-canopy a bit for better lines of sight.
Lincoln Park / Picnic Area 2
A friend of the park has been Sprucing up the overgrown picnic area down behind the kid’s play area in the south end of the park by Shelter #2. We’ll hop over and help with that work—cleaning the overgrown planting areas and uncovering native plants. There is plenty to work on here and will likely take several visits to get it in a good spot heading into Spring.
East Marginal Cleanup
Last month we worked along East Marginal Sprucing a median in between the north and southbound lanes of East Marginal under where 99 and the West Seattle Bridge intersect. We’ll continue on this work removing butterfly bush on the south side of the West Seattle Bridge along the parking areas under 99 along East Marginal that are trash magnets and create line of sight issues. This is a trash rich environment.
Burnt Encampment Cleanup
We'll drop in for continued cleanup at the burnt-out camp in the greenbelt next to Mr. Detail along Harbor Ave. A lot has already been brought down out of the camp and queued up along the street for pick-up. It's supposed to rain this week, so the area will likely be muddy in places, but the trail from the bottom to the top is in decent shape. We'll work on getting it all cleaned up Saturday and back to nature. Street-level cleanup, tree ringing and other activities also exist if the trail work isn't your thing. All are welcome!
Marshall Reserve
Marshall Reserve is a little pocket park just across the street from the Love Lock fence line view of downtown. Parks and Rec recently removed an old shed there, and the north end in particular was dark and overgrown with ivy and blackberry. We gave it several visits over the past weeks and made some epic progress—we’ll continue that good work Friday and open up the park for future visits from SPR’s Natural Area crew to come in behind us to take care of holly, laurel and some work along the hillside behind the park.

Duwamish Head Greenspace / Eagle Scout Project
Chance, a local Boy Scout, will be clearing ivy in the Duwamish Head Greenspace for his Eagle Scout award project. He and his troop are clearing a large area of ground ivy down by the old derelict treehouse, which will also be demo’d in the process. This will be the second visit for the troop, and of course we’ll continue to build off this section on our regular work in the Greenspace.
Duwamish Head Greenspace
We’ll head back to Duwamish Head Greenspace with Heather on Friday and continue pulling ivy after getting 200+ native plants in the ground over the past several months! We’ll also be prepping an area for an Eagle Scout project for a West Seattle scout who will be clearing a section of the green space with his troop.

Parks and Rec recently removed an old shed there and the north end in particular is dark and overgrown with ivy and blackberry. Greg and Tim carved into it this end last week, so we’ll continue on their good work and open up that end of the park.

Seacrest Park
We’ll return to Seacrest Park this week and continue Sprucing along the shoreline path between Cove 1 just north of Salty’s and Cove 2 in front of Marination. The area has some willow overgrowth as well as the usual English ivy and blackberry brambles that we’ll work on removing, we’ve made in credible progress over the past several weeks and look forward to moving north towards Marination.
East Marginal Cleanup
We worked along East Marginal last week Sprucing a median in between the north and southbound lanes of East Marginal under where 99 and the West Seattle Bridge intersect. We’ll wrap up that median and then continue removing butterfly bush around the street and parking areas under the bridge along East Marginal.

Spokane St. / Bike Path
We'll head back to the east side of S. Spokane St. to help Mary clean up this always in need area. We’ll park in the little lot that we started Sprucing last year and continue down the bike path on that side of Spokane. We’ll be working on removing invasives, trimming the edges along the bike path, and clearing trash.
42nd & Edmunds
Hi team, a group member’s granddaughter has made a special request to cleanup the neighborhood around her dance studio. In particular she wanted to clean up a little planting bed at 42nd & Edmunds which was recently pruned up uncovering lots of trash, it is kitty-corner to Jefferson Square Safeway and across the street from US Bank.
MLK Jr. Day / Lincoln Park
Genesee Hill Elementary School reached out about a Block Drop cleanup at Lincoln Park on MLK Jr. Day, so I’ll set up for a bunch of kids on the south parking lot, closest to the ferry dock.
While the kids work on trash in the park we’ll plan on Sprucing up under a couple large trees between the small parking lot and the play area.
Schmitz Park
We’ll meet forest steward Heather Scott at her dead end entrance into Schmitz Park off Spokane St., and continue helping dive into English ivy removal. We’ve made great progress there this past year with many large-scale ivy pulling events. We’ll work on connecting past areas cleared.
Seacrest Park
We’ll return to Seacrest Park this week and work on Sprucing up on the path between Cove 1 just north of Salty’s and Cove 2 in front of Marination. Cove Park
We’ll join Mary down at Cove Park next to the Fauntleroy Ferry this week and give it a seasonal Sprucing; weeding beds, thinning overgrowth, pruning and removing any trash. This is a beautiful little street end park with active ferry traffic and great water views.
